Shindico undertaking historical renovation of iconic office asset.
Work began on the restoration of the Confederation Life building on June 1, 2017 to preserve the distinctive cladding of this significant building and upgrade the interior systems to provide tenants and visitors the same comfort they would expect in a modern building. Several repairs will be performed including:
- Mortar join repointing
- Terra Cotta patching and repairs
- Dutchman repairs using custom fabricated pieces
- Stabilization with stainless steel rods into the back-up material
The investment in restoration is beneficial as the Confederation Life Building has been featured on walking tours in the exchange district and features some unique heritage features such as a curved façade (which matches the curving of the street), beautiful terra cotta work and prominent exposure on Main Street. Great care is being taken to restore several of the architectural features of the building to preserve their heritage value. The presence and exposure, as well as linkage to the east exchange make the building unique. Work is expected to be completed in September 2017.
The Confederation Life Building was built in 1912 and was designated a historic site of Canada in 1976. Originally used for insurance company offices, it is one of Winnipeg’s tallest skyscrapers and was designed by architect J. Wilson Gray. Its neighbours include Pantages Theatre, the historic Union Tower and Winnipeg City Hall. Over the years, several other professional and financial firms that contributed to Winnipeg’s economic growth of the early 20th century were housed in the Confederation Life Building. Presently, the building is being used as office space.
