In 2004 the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) was moved to recognize the unique achievements of the commercial practitioners across the country by creating the Canadian Commercial Council of Realtors - Merit Award to be handed out annually. If my math is correct, so far that’s twelve annual awards…out of those twelve awards, Winnipeg has won FIVE of them (2006, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2016).

Perhaps there’s something in the water here.  Winnipeg is different.  As a smaller “subsidiary” market in the world of commercial real estate, Winnipeg continuously punches above its weight, earning the respect of industry players across the country and from around the globe.

The extreme diversity of our economy is well documented and has proven itself time and time again to provide not only solid and consistent returns to investors but has demonstrated the ability to withstand the most powerful effects of global recessionary forces.

Sure we may not have the wild spikes in pricing but then we don’t suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune when the markets collapse like in other major cities.  We just keep inextricably moving forward, steady as she goes.

Our unique qualities are well reflected by the success of the Commercial Division of the Winnipeg Realtors Association. Founded in 1903 it is the longest running real estate organization in North America.

There are approximately 6,300 commercial practitioners in Canada represented through 25 different commercial divisions.  Winnipeg is home to about 200 commercial members.

The Commercial Division Executive here has continually responded to the needs of our membership by implementing unique initiatives such as Breakfast Series Speakers, education opportunities including the much coveted CCIM courses, the creation of an internet based Commercial Property Information Exchange (CPIX), SABRE (Solds for Appraisers and Brokers of Real Estate), golf tournaments and one of the most popular initiatives, an in-house publication of a 40-page Commercial Magazine. Our division is also one of the very few in Canada that has attracted the active participation of all of the major brokerage houses.

Yes, we’re different here…in a great way.  I think I’ll go get a glass of that water.
